WOMEN’S HEALTH Services FAQ’s:

What is pelvic floor physical therapy?

The primary goal of pelvic floor physical therapy is to provide rehab to individuals afflicted with pelvic muscle dysfunction. This can include issues with pelvic muscle activation, relaxation, increased muscle tightness/ tension, pain with intercourse/ penetration, urinary problems (leakage, inability to empty bladder, frequency of needing to empty bladder, constipation), pregnancy, post-partum healing/ care, prolapse, or general pelvic pain.

When should a patient seek medical permission for internal pelvic floor treatment from their MD team?

If a patient is currently pregnant, a rx is required by our team for treatment. Those whom are postpartum should also seek medical clearance to begin PT.

In which trimester is internal pelvic floor physical therapy intervention safe?

We advise OBGYN clearance at all times if the patient has an active pregnancy.

How many weeks postpartum should the patient be prior to receiving treatment?

Typically, patients are cleared between 6-12 weeks after delivering. At the 6 week mark, the patient should be following up with their MD for routine care in which case they can receive clearance for initiation of skilled PT intervention. In some instances, MD’s may request treatment begin ahead of the 6 week timeline in which case, with written referral indicating as such, treatment can begin.

Do Quinn Orthopedic providers treat male pelvic floor patients?

No, not at this time.
